CLIENT CASE STUDY

SMG strengthened partner leadership in an Australian professional services firm, driving measurable behavioural shift, commercial performance and broader strategic influence

Partner leadership development in action

Situation

A leading Australian professional services partnership sought to strengthen partner-level leadership capability to accelerate commercial performance and firmwide impact.

While technically strong, many Partners and Directors needed to broaden their leadership beyond delivery, strengthening their strategic influence, stakeholder impact and revenue contribution across the firm.

The firm invested in developing purpose-led leaders who could operate with greater commercial accountability, build stronger internal alignment and lead more effectively in complex client environments.

Our solution

SMG was appointed to the firm’s Executive Coaching and Mentoring Panel, supporting high-potential and emerging Partners and Directors nationally.

We delivered structured coaching, mentoring and blended engagements aligned directly to firm strategy and growth priorities.

Each leader identified two to three high-impact development priorities linked to:

  • Commercial growth and revenue contribution
  • Strategic influence across clients and the partnership
  • Leadership effectiveness in complex, high-accountability environments

Coaching focused on shifting leaders from excellent subject-matter and technical delivery to broader commercial leadership, strengthening their strategic thinking, stakeholder influence and team empowerment.

Impact was measured through structured sponsor reviews and documented outcomes, ensuring behavioural change translated into business performance.

Results

The program delivered consistent, measurable shifts in leadership capability and commercial impact.

  • 80%+ goal achievement – participants delivered against clearly defined, high-impact development priorities
  • Documented behavioural shift – leaders transitioned from technical experts to broader, more strategic leaders, validated through sponsor feedback
  • Stronger cross-functional influence – increased collaboration and engagement across service lines within six months
  • Enhanced commercial leadership capability – a more strategically positioned, growth-focused partner cohort across the firm

Leaders moved beyond technical expertise to operate as commercially focused, strategically aligned leaders across the partnership.
